Bill L. Smith (208) 885-2815 bills@uidaho.edu |
Director
Dr. Bill L. Smith, Director of the Martin Institute and Martin School, discovered International Studies at UI almost by accident. A historian by training, he found the combination of fields of study embodied in the IS degree fit his interests perfectly, prompting him to embrace the interdisciplinary program wholeheartedly. His knack for bringing students, faculty, alumni, and visitors together helps the Institute and School greatly. Research interests include the role of sport in general and soccer specifically in the international arena, Mexico’s history and politics, and various aspects of the UN system. He says that one of the great things about working with the Institute and School (as well as the affiliated Borah Foundation) is the chance to study new topics every year, which is a rare treat for an academic. Hired by the Institute in 2000, Dr. Smith lives in Pullman with his wife, Kaari, and daughters Bailey and Kasey. He has also lived in Mexico, Portugal, and Spain in addition to his native California. |
