2005 National Model United Nations
March 22 - 26, 2005
UI Wins Award!
UI Wins Award Representing Norway,
Meets with Norwegian diplomats, and UI Alumni

Nineteen UI students participated in the 2005 National Model United Nations simulation, and were honored for their work with the awarding of another prestigious recognition. Norway proved to be a particularly interesting country to study for its approach to partnerships in the developing world and stand on issues related to the environment. Of particular interest to the UI delegation was Norway’s membership on the UN’s smallest committee, the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. In many ways, Norway’s groundbreaking approach to working with its own indigenous community the Sami has set the standard for political, social, and cultural inclusion of the indigenous in national arenas.

Head delegates Elizabeth Forwood and John Spalding with Norwegian diplomats Per Landemoen (First Secretary) and Unni Rambøll (Counselor). |
Under the leadership of co-Head Delegates Elizabeth Forwood and John Spalding, UI students served on eleven committees that simulated actual UN bodies and considered issues from the 2003 agendas of their respective organizations. This was the sixth straight year the Martin Institute sponsored a delegation to the NMUN conference.
In addition, three former delegation members served on the national staff at the conference: Jenny Hathaway, Mike Kitzman, and Jacob Schanzenbach.
